Sharing a Room

The weekend before Halloween we took the plunge and moved the girls into the same room.

In the weeks leading up to this decision Reese had begun to get territorial about her room. She was constantly locking Paige out of it and declaring certain toys as hers.

While Reese moved into a "big girl" bed before she was two, Paige is content to remain in her crib for now. So, we now have a bedroom with a bed, crib, dresser, and bookshelf and a playroom full of everything else.

The first few nights sleeping together resulted in some late bedtimes since the girls stayed up talking and reading together, but they quickly adapted. Our only major road bump was convincing Paige that it was not Reese's job to re-tuck her in at night if her blankies came off. A very tired and cranky Reese told  us one morning, "I'm just not getting enough rest with Paige in the room. Every time she wakes up and needs her blankies back on she wakes me up, and I just can't get them on right through those bars."  Poor girl. Paige has since learned to manage her blankies by herself.

Having a playroom is also a godsend for Daddy and me. The girls will disappear into it for longish stretches (by toddler standards we're talking 15-30 minutes) that make tasks like unloading the dishwasher possible again. And, most days when they wake up in the morning, they'll read together or talk rather than running into our bedroom at dark o'clock. The playroom is almost always a mess, and yes it disgusts me a little to see just how many toys they own, but it has a lovely feature: a door that I can close. And if it's behind a closed door it temporarily ceases to exist.

Playing "Shoe Store"

Empty boxes never get old.

Reese taking Paige for a ride in a baby stroller.
Yes, the kind of stroller you're not supposed to really ride in.
