Halloween

Picking out Halloween costumes with the girls is one of my favorite events of the year. Yes, it takes weeks to  confirm their decisions, and yes, I probably spend too much time and money on the process, but I can't help it. (These costumes live on for years in our dress up box, so we get more than one night of wear out of them. The owl hat from two years ago still gets regular use.)

This was the first year for Paige to voice an opinion about her costume. While at age two Reese adamantly demanded to be an owl before ever laying her eyes on any Halloween costume ads or catalogs, Paige had no such pre-conceived notions--thankfully. Her sister, however, still continues to have very particular visions for her Halloween garb. This year Reese was conflicted about whether to be a fairy princess of some kind of aquatic animal (maybe this was all a hold-over from last year's lobster costume failure). After perusing our options and laying out a budget (you can spend A LOT on fairy princess gear), Reese settled on a sea turtle costume. Paige gladly continued the underwater theme by requesting to be a goldfish. Not just any kind of fish, a goldfish. ("Paige, are you going to be a fish for Halloween?" "No, not fish. Goldfish.")

On Halloween night the girls donned their gear and started trick-or-treating early. At first Paige was a little confused about the process. After each of the first three houses she thought it was time to go home. Reese tried to explain to her that we were going to lots of houses, but it wasn't until Reese mentioned that Paige would get more CANDY that things finally clicked. Paige has a sweet tooth that's hard to tame. Suddenly, Paige wanted to visit EVERY house she saw and she ran up to every stranger shouting "Trick-or-treat! Trick-or-treat!" Even when Paige's basket was too heavy for her to manage she refused to let Mommy or Daddy carry it.

After making our way around a long block Reese told us, "I think I have enough candy. Let's go home, I'm kinda tired." We breathed a sigh of relief that we were offered such an easy out, and we pounced on it. In future years I'm not sure we'll be so lucky.
